While “customer” and “client” are often perceived as synonymous, subtle differences exist between the two. It is likely you have been referred to as both and today we will debunk what makes each unique.

Let us start by defining both terms:

Customer – a person or organization that buys goods or services from a store or business.

Client – a person or organization using the services of a professional person or company.

Someone considered to be a customer makes more of a one-time transaction from a vendor. Clients are those who use a service of a company on a continual basis and engage in ongoing relationships.

Now we’ll review examples:

  • Customer – purchasing a coffee at a service station while traveling
  • Client – engaging in using the services of a lawyer by retaining them for ongoing business needs

So are you a customer, or a client? Maybe both?

What drives you to use a specific product, vendor, or service?

Circumstances will vary, but at LinenMaster we treat all those who use our products as clients. We aim to engage in business partnerships grounded in strong relationships and encourage feedback, collaboration, and friendship.

At the end of the day it is about what makes the most sense for your needs.

One thing is for sure- you may never view “customer” and “client” as the same thing ever again! Don’t be afraid to ask potential vendors how they perceive those who purchase from them because understanding the differences between “customer” and “client” may be what guides you towards vendors that best suit your business.
